Strong Pong Means Something's Wrong

There was a dreadful pall hanging over Rhuthun/Ruthin this morning. It was like Lewis & Hunter but worse and widespread. Or perhaps like burning tyres. The smell even managed to get indoors.

The scene over Glasdir this morning at 7a.m.

It turns out that this morning at about 3a.m., the Rhuthun/Ruthin waste transfer station on Lôn Parcwr began to simmer. It wasn't an intense blaze, more of a smoulder. A fire crew arrived at 5a.m. and it took till 3p.m. to deal with the situation they found. This was because individual elements of rubbish required to be removed and checked before dowsing. And it was also because someone had to punch a hole into the building, as there was no other way of seeing what was going on inside. There was fire damage to the roof and building cladding.

The more worrying thing was that the waste may well have been contaminated, so who knows what noxious, poisonous or toxic substances were released into the atmosphere.

All this alongside coronavirus. If only we could actually smell that little troublemaker.
