Signs of the Times

More and more signs are appearing on business doorways and windows. They inform patrons of changes to hours, expected changes of behaviour or complete closures, thanks to coronavirus and the school situation, as proprietors and staff get used to the new reality.

The oddest is at the entrance to the HSBC. It tells us that, from the weekend, all HSBC branches will close at weekends. The Rhuthun/Ruthin branch has never opened at the weekend.

From the HSBC website

The remainder of the notice tells us of temporary changes to services at the branch but doesn't specify what those are. Meanwhile, HSBC is using the epidemic to encourage those of us who don't bank on line to do so now. "Stay safe. Bank at home". Where will this leave the branch & building when we emerge out of the current crisis?

Lovely spring sunshine brought more people out on the street, today. Whether any of us should've been there remains to be seen. Traffic was again heavy, generating the question as to who was actually travelling and why. Meanwhile, the number of cars parked at County Hall shrank further. Tesco's car park was less full than yesterday but business was brisk.

Cafés: W & G Jones had two patrons at lunchtime; Cahtwin's three; Gail's six, including the Warden and the curate; and there was no one in Bar Llaeth. The Coffee Cabin was again closed. And, from today, Costa effectively became a takeaway, with contracted opening hours, plastic crockery, takeaway cups and no seating available. There was one person within.

Probably the most telling notice of all: Well Street Pharmacy has no cleaning products. Will we ever see hand gel again in Rhuthun?
