Peas—no Guarantees

Traffic was moving about today but otherwise this morning the town was quite—till you reached B & M, the Co-op and Tesco. B & M's car park was full (but that doesn't take much) and there was a buzz of customer movement outside and within. Tesco's car park was not at its peak but business was brisk.

Gappy: not just frozen peas unavailable at the Co-op

The expected delivery did *eventually* reach the Co-op yesterday but with it came no frozen peas. Better than yesterday, veg was looking somewhat sparse, as were the usual high profile commodities people thus far have been hoarding. There was some dried pasta available. The number of empty boxes on shelves had increased, as the instruction to remove them was replaced by one to ensure that exhausted cases remain on the racks.

Metaphorically next door and Tesco was very busy for a Sunday morning, with a few baskets but mainly customer trolleys stacked high. Tins, pasta, medicines, the usual were all in short supply. Like at the Co-op, there were gaps in the freezers but there were a few packets of peas available. Shelves remained devoid of lavatory paper. There seemed to be a heightened number of older people out, perhaps as a result of media speculation that those over 70 would shortly be asked to reduce dramatically their contact with others. One had what looked akin to a pair of medical gloves. Everyone was congenial & affable and, unlike in some places as noted on the media, there was no hint of carnage, chaos or anarchy.

Can this atmosphere of cordiality be maintained without a consistent and dependable supply of frozen peas?

By 3p.m., everything had quietened down to something like a normal Sunday. A number of oriental students from Schola Ruthinensis taking advantage of the last hour of Tesco's availability were wearing face masks.

There were plenty of people who claimed never to have deployed panic buying tactics. Given the state of some supermarket supplies, including what appeared to be a rush on pease, I just wonder how true this actually was.

Meanwhile, it's good to report that the Ruthin Town FC first team player reportedly with coronavirus-like symptoms is apparently improving. On this occasion, it doesn't look like he had Covid-19.
