Cruel Twist

My own exercise this morning was at exactly the same time as yesterday's. What struck me was the change in traffic. Yesterday, volumes were near normal. Today, far fewer cars were on the road. Yesterday was the day after the prime minister's evening broadcast instructing as many of us to stay at home. Yesterday, perhaps workers headed into their workplaces to bring back work and laptops for home working. Perhaps they were turned back at their gates.

And, look what I spotted on my stroll around Rhuthun/Ruthin. This family had bought a load of Ikea flat-packs. Someone's gotten themselves a home office, methinks.

What a cruel twist, today, though. Throughout the day, blue skies, sunshine, no breeze, temperatures nearing 20°... and time on our hands. Yet, here we are, confined to barracks. Three cyclists pedal by. The occasional single walker enjoying their single shot at exercise. A mother and young children. A few cars all pass by.

And, this afternoon, the air was filled with the fetor of the season's first barbecue. You'd think there was nothing to worry about. But there is. The news is compelling but also disturbing and disheartening.
