In Passing—May 2018

May 2nd saw fencing installed around the perimeter of the former Rhos Street schools site.
The two new semi-detached houses at land at the junction of Wynnstay Road and Well Street are now complete, with the erection of a low wall to the houses' frontage.

The haphazard saga of Corwen Carprets, rarely off this blog, continues. It was exactly three years ago since Corwen Carpets secured the former Newyddion Rhuthun/Halifax/Santander premises on Well Street. It took three months before there was any movement within. Thereafter, we have seen incremental but slow change. In May, the spectacle was of yellow-on-green facia boards along the bottom of the shop windows put out at the start and removed at the end of each day. They are now permanently in place on Well Street... but for some reason, there's a different set on Wynnstay Road.

The former Apparel and latterly Greyhound Rescue charity shop, previously empty, has transformed itself into TĹ· Architecture, an architect and design office. Although this is now an office rather than a shop—and we've lost one more store unit in town—it maintains a shop-like frontage and this helps to maintain a town centre streetscape.

Ceffi jewellers etc finally opened on Well Street, in the former Celf a Chrefft premises next to the Well Street pharmacy. What is particularly interesting is their shop hours: interesting in that they will open from 11.00 to 6.00 on weekdays (and 10.00 to 6.00 on Saturdays). Very unusual.

We can't actually recall how long Oliver's fudge shop has been open. We think at least six months. But it's now closed. Another will o'the wisp. Another case of investment in an idea that hasn't lasted.

11 Stryd y Brython's back on the housing market. Something's gone wrong and its previous status as sold subject to contract was withdrawn on May 11th. Williams Estates and Cavendish Ikin are re-marketing the place, again at £315,000. Again, it's far too expensive. Again, it's Rhuthun/Ruthin's longest property on the market.

May 23rd was polling day and possibly the last time we shall be using Canolfan Awelon for such purposes.

There is good progress on the new dining hall at Schola Ruthinensis.
