Sunrise

Sunday at around 7 a.m. is an interesting time to wander round town. There are few people who can spy on you as you take careful note of the quiddities and minutiae, although those who are around tend to regard any interest at this hour in the town, its buildings and shops as suspicious.

In early October, if there are few clouds, the weak autumnal sun can glow attractively pink over the Clwydian Range. Otherwise, 7 is too early to be anything other than a little dismal. Today, though, is perfect.

You'd think the town would be empty. In fact, there are a handful of pedestrians and drivers abroad. At this time, those small numbers walking through town are likely to have a purpose. This is obvious for those with dogs. Me, I'm just an observer. This morning, there is even an unusual small clot of surprisingly conscious and alert young people at the corner of Well Street and Station Road. Perhaps they decide it isn't worth going to bed after the night before.

An oriental-looking man passes noisily across the Square, twice announcing his presence with a seasonal deep grating of the throat and then a load sputter onto the pavement, once on the Square itself and the other on the approach to St Peter's.

There is also invariably a car parked near one of the banks, as someone withdraws cash for goods or services they cannot possibly buy in town till at least 8 a.m. when the first shop opens, the newsagent Castle Bell. Bridge Services seemingly never sleeps, though.

And then there is the small team of street cleaners who are tasked with clearing up after Saturday  night. Week in, week out, they usually start even earlier so that by 7 a.m. we can all enjoy the town at its smartest and best. Not that anyone cares or notices, though they would if there was a mess.
