Open Again at the End of the Month

We didn't see this coming. Dan Thomson who for seven months from August 2014 ran The Kitchen at the Farmers Arms—and the ordinary yet tasty food could not come more highly recommended—is to re-open the Olde Cross Keys.

Just when we have been saying that there's no room for some many restaurants. Just when we've been remarking that for a town Rhuthun/Ruthin's size we have an incredible number of high-end restaurants, here's another. Well, we don't actually know how Thomson will pitch his food but the same competition exists as was blamed for the pub's closure: Wetherspoon's at the lower and the Myddleton Grill at the upper end.

This is still a bit of a gamble, then. It has to rely on passing trade or those who deliberately wish to travel there because the local catchment's thin. The former landlady threw in the towel in April 2015 (so the business has been shut a year). She had previously run it while the place was on the market from January 2015 as a home. It technically still is on the market*. She had no luck in selling, either as a going concern (to January 2015) or for residential purposes (January 2015 to date).

One other issue facing Thomson is the deteriorated condition of the place. The rendering is looking grimy and some of the woodwork and metalwork needs repainting or renovating.

Now, though, the former landlady must be delighted.

*—it was taken off the market w/b 9/5/16
