Whatever Happened to...

... the voices in Rhuthun/Ruthin who once spearheaded the campaign to make car parks free and then reduce the prices? That was about eight years ago. After this month's  changes to car parking arrangements, it speaks volumes that in yesterday's Free Press it was up to *Dinbych* traders to campaign on "the anti-business parking price hike" rather than Rhuthun's.

This is quite a turn of events. It's usually Ruthinians who speak up. In fact, for good or ill, Rhuthun seems to have a reputation for complaining. Why has the once vocal Rhuthun contingent fallen so silent? Since the announcement of the revised parking charges, we've heard not a squeak from the usual sources. Ymlaen Rhuthun Forward was the parking charge ringleader but that organisation's declined in both importance and energy. The Chamber of Trade is again almost non-existent.

And so it is that Dinbych takes up the fight and not Rhuthun. Said a Dinbych town councillor, "It's outrageous. A few weeks ago the car park opposite me was 25p an hour and was fairly full. This week it's £1 an hour and it's empty.

Overheard was the mayor of Rhuthun Anne Roberts. Whether this was a private comment or her official political view I am not sure but even she remarked that the new charges were actually not so bad. Time will tell whether motorists will agree with her or not.
