Just Wrong

"This is wrong on so many levels". How often do you hear that statement? What does it actually mean? I suppose it's a modern way of saying something is wrong in any way you wish to look at it.

Front page headline from today's Denbighshire Free Press

Here's something wrong on three levels. The first is simply that hanging on to the rear of a bus is stupid behaviour and dangerous in the extreme. The second is that the Free Press has it wrong to suggest Rhuthun/Ruthin has a "rush hour". A maximum 10-car queue that waxes and wanes over a 20 minute period along Well Street with its junction with Station Road is not like a several mile tailback on the M62.

But, crucially, the Free Press is simply wrong in publishing the story at all. It's another case of irresponsible journalism. Why? As with any anti-social behaviour or vandalism, giving it the act the oxygen of publicity only serves to bring it to the attention of others. In tis case, the consequences could be fatal. It threatens copycat occurrences and, as such, should always be a last resort rather than a first reaction.
