Top Dre at 20

Now, that's what I call a crowd! Top Dre celebrated its 20th birthday today—it seems a lot older—with an incredible turnout. Its chief sponsor, Taylor Wimpey, will have been very pleased. This was in complete contrast to the carnival of last Saturday. Don't believe what you read in the Free Press that the carnival was a "huge success". In terms of spectators, it was not.

But otherwise Top Dre certainly was, with nine acts occupying 12 slots—and lots of happy punters watching (or just chatting). Not shown here was the Town Brass Band, the well-received Rodgers School of Irish Dance and the Denbighshire Big Band (billed by its old name of the Denbighshire Fusion Band) who, admittedly, could have been microphoned up better.

Closing act Joe Woolford received a sensational welcome. Just look at that cheeky Woolford smile

Y Moniars, though upstaged by Woolford for the finale, nevertheless were as popular as ever. The drummer looked like he was caught out, though

Yr Adar flew in. Whatever happened to the River City Jazzmen?

Isaac Birchall and his Band were probably the best contemporary act of the day. As his father's hair gets longer, so this year his son cut off his ponytail

The female lead singer of the young band Y Trŵbz had a very powerful voice but actually just tended to screech

Much more melodic. Pentennyn occupied two early slots with their tasteful folk offering. Like others, they migrated to The Boars in the evening, where their more intimate sound suited the venue well

For over an hour before proceedings, St Peter's entertained children on its bouncy castle. This collection of church talent was incredibly professional

Inflation might've caught up with Top Dre but this only equates to about £2 at 1995 prices, 20 years ago. Good value indeed

Local authorities merged already? This Flintshire van was part of the support crew

Thanks to the organisers for their work to make this another excellent Top Dre. Spare a thought for the roadworkers who efficiently cleaned up after the event
