The scores on the food hygiene doors have been with us since 2011. The Rhuthun/Ruthin Blog was the first of the local media to consider and publicise this rather important topic. Four years on, what's the latest?

In the lay-by just north of Rhuthun
- The number of Rhuthun establishments rated by Denbighshire has topped 100. At the start, it was just 30.
- Back in 2011, the average was 3.9. Now, it's 4.7, all out of 5. So, there is no doubt that the scheme has been successful in raising standards.
- Public bodies have consistently been rated at 5 out of 5. Now, private undertakings also tend to score top marks.
- In 2011, the White Horse Llanfair DC was the only establishment to score zero. I must admit that I thought it had closed (in 2012) but it has nevertheless scored 5, from September 2014.
- The Eagles Bakery & Farmers Arms have both increased from 3 to 5.
- The current scores show that only four outlets scored 3 or less. These were Leonardo's (3, once 2); Castell Rhuthun Castle (once 3, now 2); W & G Jones butchers (consistently 2); and Rhuthun's poorest scorer, newcomer to hygiene scoring Nature’s Treasures (Well Street at The Machine), scoring just 1. Interestingly, Nature's Treasure seems to struggle with its service offer: is it a newsagent, an outdoor store, a nicknack shop or purveyor of food? Perhaps its diversity in such a small, confided space accounts for its low score.
- The remainder scored 4 or 5. Note that W & G Jones's café (as opposed to the butchers) has scored 5 consistently.
- From September 2014, three have increased their scores: The Star Bistro (under its fourth set of managers, from 3 to 4, previously 2); Awelon (4 to 5); and Panda Garden (once 1, then 2 & 3, to 4).
