Mococo and Sundays

It was the first day of Mococo's seven day week trading: it was open today from 11 a.m. to 4 p.m. This raises two issues.

First, Rhuthun/Ruthin likes to think of itself as a visitor destination. Yet, there's precious little to do on a Sunday. Sure, Tesco, the Co-op the Pet Place are all open. Bar Llaeth is, too, as is Café  R. But that's it, that's the lot. Perhaps others will follow Mococo into the brave world of Sunday trading. Perhaps Mococo is an early adopter. I suspect, though, that Sundays will continue to be no different in spite of Mococo's attempts. Maybe that's OK but is it good enough in 21st century Wales in a town that has aspirations? Or maybe the town needs to address the few who bother to open on Saturday afternoon, first.

Secondly, let us ponder Mococo's success. It's a jeweler but not like the traditional Gareth Lynch once was. Lynch's tried to appeal to eople across a number of markets. It was traditional in nature. Mococo is very much mid-range, focusing on fashion.

The shop opened in 2006 and moved to the former Ethel Austin in 2010. It has shop-fitted style that surpasses anything else in Rhuthun. It now has branches in Yr Wyddgrug/Mold, Caer/Chester, Wrecsam, Wigan, Penbedw/Birkenhead and Lerpwl//Liverpool. In spite of the proprietrix being a Liverpudlian, it started here in Rhuthun.
