Of Paint and Problems

You'll be forgiven for wondering whether this is the Faerie Pirates/Hardly Nickels' blog.

In the press last week, the proprietoress stated that there were three shops that closed "last week" (i.e. the week before). I cannot reconcile that statement.

Veena's has *recently* closed. As someone said in a recent comment, Veena's may have suffered from a lack of market forethought. Was there a large market in Rhuthun/Ruthin for a handbag shop appealing to the younger element? However, combining this with a fish pedicure may have seemed like a strange association but, judging by clientele, this *did* appeal to younger people.

The other shop to close was Robbin's. This was in Clwyd Street above Simmi and it sold art and craft type material. Does Robbin's count, though? Robbin's opened less than six months ago. Neither it nor Veena's were long standing.

What the proprietor didn't acknowledge was that the long standing Slater's site was about to come into use again, as Ruthin Décor. This is hugely important for Rhuthun.

There are, of course, rumours of a further closure or two (aside from First House when the proprietor retires in December. Is he *really* 60?).

Faerie Pirates/Hardly Nickels isn't the only premises in town to benefit from a lick of paint (or not to benefit, depending upon your view). The Feathers, Well Street, has recently swapped its cream façade for something almost identical. The Army & Navy Store, under scaffolding, has benefited from its woodwork being painted dark green. And, slightly further up Well Street, the former Artefacts has been over-painted in black & white ready, no doubt, for its opening as the Royal British Legion's local HQ during the poppy season.

All these are somewhat conservative when compared to Faerie Pirates/Hardly Nickels' purple paintwork on the cream of the building at the junction of St Peter's Square and Clwyd Street.

The more observant among us may have noticed that the town's pillar boxes had their repainting during the summer. Even the standalone small box on a thin post at Cae Seren was repainted. The exception was the lonesome, forgotten pillar box on Lôn Parcwr.

I doubt whether anyone would complain about the pillar box in St Peter's Square being repainted red but, in the light of a very plum-like departure from cream at Faerie Pirates/Hardly Nickels, I wonder whether anyone might wish to complain…
