Pubs in Crisis?

Yesterday, bailiffs acting on behalf of the Myddleton Arms' landlords entered to take possession of the building. This obviously forced its closure and the Myddleton now joins a lengthening list of Rhuthun/Ruthin pubs that have recently closed or have an uncertain future.

Who knows what might happen but it seems that at some point in the future the Myd could conceivably continue to trade. It was certainly quite a popular venue.

It was once known as the Castle Arms. I assume this was at the same time as the Castle Hotel was known as the White Lion. Until recently, the two were connected and, indeed, both owned by Stephanie. Perhaps with a view to wooing the American tourist market, the Myd was also formally called The Seven Eyes. The nickname Eyes of Ruthin is widely used by everyone—except those who live in Rhuthun.

Geraint Owen in his "Old and Present Pubs of Ruthin Town" suggests the rear we see, backing on to St Peter's Square, was built in 1550 but that the building itself dates from the 14th century. Owen states that the building's famous roofline might date from the 18th century.

Finally, the Ruthin All Styles Music Club started afresh last night at the Old Cross Keys, Llanfwrog. This follows the closure of the Wynnstay. The club had previously met in the Castle Hotel.
