Masterplan 2

We're asking for your views in a brief two-question survey. Click here

We understand that the Masterplan 2 exhibition in the Craft Centre has but one week left to run. Go down and see what you think and stick a few Post It notes on the wall or the model townscape. There are plenty of them already, colour coded according to the respondent's preferences. Plenty of school children appear to have cast their views. That's great, as they will be the ones who in future will need to live with the decisions we adults now take.

Masterplan 2 is the next stage of the Rhuthun y Dyfodol/Ruthin Future process. It refines the original concept and, in particular, draws on the analysis of Masterplan 1 to look at six key topics that appear fundamental to the town. One of the six is, "Where is the heart of the town?"

I'm surprised that they have to ask. The conclusion, though, is that St Peter's Square is suffering. It's blighted by traffic.

Awkward questions then emerge. And conflicts arise. Are they right to suggest that the Square is dominated by cars—parked or moving? Is this a good or a bad thing? Aren't there nearby reasonable car parking alternatives? Why do people park on the yellow lines along the edge Square anyway, when this is unlawful to do so?

And, more importantly, will we have the courage to do something about the Square? As we await the forthcoming one-way traffic proposals, suggestions that will inevitably see more rather than fewer parking spaces, we should consider our next steps carefully.

Pedestrianisation of the Square and even the removal of the roundabout provide an opportunity for the creation of a real core or nucleus for the town. It gives the opportunity to enjoy a public space at the most historic part of the centre, free from the general interference of the motor car. If you consider the comments received during Masterplan 1, you realise that above all else, the Square is the no.1 priority for most people.

If Masterplan 2 means anything, surely we must take this forward. Do you agree?

Here, will the newly formed chamber of commerce act conservatively? What will traders feel? They fear a reduction in parking & traffic will literally drive people to edge of town Tesco's and others. In truth, people will probably go edge-of-town anyway, so is it time to be bold? Just how do we balance the needs of residents, shoppers and traders?

What do you think? Should we pedestrianise:
  • The one way rectangle of St Peter's Square
  • The rectangle and the roundabout area, between the church and National Westminster bank
  • The town centre, from Well Street/Record Street to Clwyd Street/Upper Clwyd Street
  • The whole town centre, all of Well Street, Clwyd Street, Upper Clwyd Street, Castle Street and the upper part of Market Street
  • Nothing, keeping it as it is, even seeing increased parking where opportunities present themselves
