Hallowe'en Exposed

It seems a long time ago since Hallowe'en. Ymlaen Rhuthun Forward again ran its Spooktacular event. This second year, it offered two nights' worth of entertainment, presumably because Hallowe'en fell on Sunday 31st October and many were referring to it as "Hallowe'en weekend".

Along with the police campaign to try to discourage callers where they are unwelcome, Spooktacular's designed to keep primary and young secondary school age children off the streets at trick or treat time.

So, was Spooktacular a success? I don't know. I'm too old to attend. Last year, personally, we had zero nuisance callers, so it did the trick, if you'll pardon the pun. This, we also had none on Saturday but you wouldn't expect them on that evening. Sunday was different. Perhaps they'd been to Saturday's Spooktacular, for they were out in force on the street as normal. One party of two children was particularly aggressive.

If you have your copy of The Grocer of 23 October 2010 handy, turn to page 17. Here, you will see Hallowe'en exposed for what it is, noting short of a commercial opportunity ready for exploitation. It’s quite shocking how the grocery retail trade and the manufacturers of the products it sells are all keen to take advantage of a gullible public. "It's a case of any excuse to have a seasonal aisle", said a commentator. Continuing, this year, Hallowe'en's been "more noticeable" than last.

So it would seem on the streets of Rhuthun/Ruthin, too.
