Different Approaches

Much has been said about the decision by Schola Ruthinensis (Ruthin School) to end, after 40 years, its pre-preparatory and preparatory departments. If there’s this level of debate about the public (private) school sector, what can we expect about changes to state education? Primary closures are already a possibility south and west of Rhuthun/Ruthin. Schools of less than 80 may come under threat (though there *are* other solutions to complete closure).

In today's Free Press, turn to pages 12 and 13. On 12, there are three pictures of children entering their new school, one of which is near Rhuthun (Bryneglwys). Here there are four pupils entering the new class. That strikes me as the sort of teaching ratios you might expect in the private sector. Disaffected Ruthin School parents need look no further than the pastoral care offered by some of our more rural schools to get the class sizes and teaching ratios that they currently pay for. Not a bad deal. Such schools would welcome pupils with open arms, I am sure.

And on page 13? A full page advert feature for Howell's "preparatory experience". I'd bet that the page was aimed squarely at Ruthin School parents who are seeking a bolt-hole for their children. Howell's takes boys to age 11, too. Interesting to compare the approaches of these two local private schools. There's also a half page ad on p.10 for Fairholme prep school, Llanelwy/St Asaph.
