Comeback Kid

Rhuthun/Ruthin's V2 discotheque reopens later this evening. It's had more comebacks than Charlotte Church. I doubt that revellers will hear any of her classical arias there tonight though, who knows, the DJ might play something from her new music album, launched earlier this month (and now available for under a fiver).

In its 15-year history, almost as old as Charlotte herself, the nightclub previously known as The Venue has had a troubled life, as has Charlotte, of course.

Residents of Canol y Dre and Prior Street have continually complained about anti-social behaviour related to The Venue.

In recent times:
  • New owners took over in October 2009, promising changes, and switching the security provider.
  • V2 was called to a hearing in December 2009. V2 had to accept a number of new conditions attached to its licence to operate.
  • Between January and February 2010, the Free Press reported nine incidents plus, in March, the failure of test purchases where door staff allowed underage girls to get in.
  • There were reported to be 20 other incidents to May 2010, when V2's licence was revoked. V2 was allowed to continue operating, pending an appeal.
  • In June, the police sought emergency action to suspend the V2 licence. This followed a brawl during which time a bouncer was glassed in the face. Revellers were allowed to re-enter after the official closing time.
  • The county council revoked the V2 licence in July 2010.
  • There was talk of a further appeal and this now appears to have prevailed.
The new owners argued that that they could not be held responsible for any failings of the previous occupiers. As it turned out, it seems that there were breaches under the new management.

The new owners also argued that events outside the disco were the police's responsibility. Leaving aside the twin issues of test purchasing and that the police shouldn't have to concentrate its scarce resources in one location, do the owners have a fair point? That might be the case were the antisocial behaviour outside V2, upon its closure, to have been exported elsewhere in town. The fact is, during the period of closure, there appears to have been no such trouble elsewhere...
