Taking Part

You don't have to like everything you see at The Masterplan exhibition. Not every design or concept on view will find its way on to the streets of Rhuthun/Ruthin. Indeed, there's no guarantee that any of them will. And, may be, some of them sit uncomfortably with their immediate environment. At this stage, though, you just need to have an opinion.

It seems to me that the key strength following the initial assessment now on view is that people are seeing Rhuthun through fresh eyes. To start with, though they no doubt have a resonance with the built environment, though they seem to be able to articulate graphically their views, the group of students whose initial ideas are on display are probably no different to the young people who live here. They represent the future.

It's a translation process. What they've done is appraise Rhuthun and laid it bare. It helps the rest of us, its ordinary residents, see beyond the day to day; begin to see things we may not have noticed; things that are around us that we simply take for granted or dismiss; or things where we simply shrug our shoulders over, through apathy or lack of empowerment. Above all, they see possibilities where we simply see the usual, everyday, where we accept things without question, where we have an indifferent view, where we fail to challenge or where we are passive in the face of change we cannot comprehend or feel powerless to stop.

For a minute, The Masterplan Phase 1 hands everything back to us, the ordinary people of Rhuthun.
