Masterplan Unveiled: Special Report

At last, the public gets its chance to see the end product of phase 1 of the Gavin Harris inspired "Rhuthun/Ruthin: Market Town of the Future".

Indeed, The Masterplan exhibition and model town opened to public view about one hour ago (at Residency Studio 1, Craft Centre). There is now an opportunity to submit written comments on the possibilities and these should then start to shape the rest of the project.

One principal vision is to remove the dominance of the car from St Peter's Square and give some of it back to the people, as more of a public space. We'd give this our vote, and we've mentioned it before, in 2006 and in 2007 and in 2008 and in 2009 and in 2010. Whether this will go down with motorists is another matter but surely the loss of six parking spaces plus the clearing out of *illegal* parking around the perimeter would be no loss. Indeed, the town's focal point has much to gain.

Another plan is to improve the 'gateway' between Tesco (plus the Craft Centre) and the town centre. Market Street is often the visitor’s first glimpse of Rhuthun. Does it inspire? Could it be better?

There are plenty of other proposals, all well laid out and most making sense. Like better pedestrian routes; tackling the cars that cross town but really should stay on Park Road; punching a hole in the Cunning Green wall to view the castle; and trying to improve the plot of land at Wernfechan by Ye Olde Anchor.

Residents have till some time in mid June to comment, though I cannot remember the exact date. Sorry!

If you love Rhuthun, this is definitely worth a visit.
