On a High

Petrol prices in Rhuthun/Ruthin ended last month at the highest they'd ever been. Unleaded weighed in at £5.59 per gallon, equivalent to 13p per mile for an average Ford Focus. By mid April, unleaded had passed the previous record of £5.45 per gallon, set back in July 2008.

The gap between diesel and unleaded closed from July 2009. In fact, there were a few days in April 2010 when the forecourt price of diesel equated to that of unleaded. This has been unprecedented in recent times. The cost of diesel at the end of April, at £5.63 per gallon, was 45p per gallon behind the July 2008 peak.

It now costs £67.67 to fill a Ford Focus tank. Just don't ask how much it costs to fill the Jag.

Meanwhile, we can look forward with some trepidation to the £6.75-£7.00 gallon this very summer.
