Our Chips

Very quietly, very subtly and almost unnoticed, Rhuthun/Ruthin has acquired another chippy. It’s been open over a week. The location’s St Peters Square and the establishment’s called Bar Llaeth, a longstanding business whose management, following an external face lift last year, has recently rearranged things within and diversified.

Open Tuesday to Thursday evenings till 7 p.m. or thereabouts and, we understand, later on Fridays and possibly Saturdays too, the frying times don’t compete head on with other town chippies. Neither do these appeal to those leaving pubs after last orders. It’s interesting, though, that here you can eat in, something you’ve not been able to do at a chippy in Rhuthun since Finns closed its adjacent restaurant in the early 1990s.

Bar Llaeth’s chips are also slightly more reasonably priced. Chips come in at £1.30 compared to £1.40 at both Finn’s and Wernfechan. Add a fishcake and the total bill is £2.55 at Finns, £2.50 at Wernfechan but £2.10 at Bar Llaeth.

Purely in the line of duty and as a service to the people of Rhuthun, the Rhuthun/Ruthin Blog has sampled chips from each of the three town centre establishments. Which is best? Well, matters are complicated by the use of different potatoes, chip sizes and frying fats. It’s therefore difficult to give a preference. I also made the fundamental error of asking for salt & vinegar and these two condiments made it difficult to differentiate between the samples.

What I would say is that the established chippies’ chips were chunkier. Although you bought about the same bowl full, Bar Llaeth’s thinner chips appeared to go further. The downside is that thinner chips have a higher surface area in proportion to the amount of potato and are therefore considered by nutritionists as being fattier.

I wonder what Bar Llaeth’s opening hours will do for parking and traffic on the Square.

Chips are also available at the takeaway on Borthyn and at other specialist takeaways.
