On a Lighter Note

During the last 10 days, this blog’s become somewhat heavy in its content and comments. Now, it's time for a lighter approach, quite literally. Also last week, there appeared in Rhuthun/Ruthin a new kind of globe atop a Belisha beacon, on Borthyn.

The new beacon globe lights work rather well. Rather that flash from within, there's a halo of light emitting diodes around its circumference. It’s visible to motorists even in the strong sunlight we had over the weekend. The LEDs (for I assume that's what they are) are in complete contrast to the standard internally flashing yellow globes seen elsewhere at Rhuthun’s other two (once three) zebras, not including Tesco’s or County Hall. And on Borthyn, at night the column is illuminated alternately black & white, plus the LEDs light up the globe at night, too. I haven’t seen one of the new type elsewhere.

It seems that the Belisha beacon—a black & white pole with an amber flashing globe on top—first burst on to the scene 76 years ago (though not then in Rhuthun). They demarcate a crossing, particularly at night, but flash all day. Newer globes have LEDs within and the newest, as at Borthyn, has them in a halo effect. Being LEDs, they should stay bright, last well and use less electricity.

The roadworks outside Borthyn School and the associated three-way traffic lights, right on the zebra crossing, are apparently to improve safety outside the school and no doubt the upgraded Belisha beacons and their globes are part of the scheme. The works started on 18 February and are due to complete by mid-April, according to a Borthyn teacher.

There you go. The Rhuthun/Ruthin Blog: the only place where you’ll find 250 words on the Belisha beacon.
