The Bungalow

No, this isn’t a post about the infamous bordello of the same name, near Deeside. Tucked away out of sight behind the grand terrace of Castle Street and abutting Castell Rhuthun Castle grounds is a little known detached prefabricated three-bed bungalow, called (rather disappointingly) The Bungalow. The only way you’ll ever see it is from the back of Castle Street or the garden of Nantclwyd y Dre. Vehicular entry is off Upper Clwyd Street, though there is a footpath to the side of Nantclwyd y Dre. It’s been on the market since the summer and we understand that it’s now under offer.

Here’s one property that unusually the agent hasn’t over-exaggerated. Indeed, prospective buyers seem discouraged from even looking within. As the agent states, “The Bungalow itself… offers little in terms of architectural or historic merit.”

The reason for buying, then, the attraction? Its grounds. At over ½ acre, The Bungalow offers something rather unique—plenty of land in a secluded, traffic free position in the centre of town, plus views west over Rhuthun and to the hills. The estate agent feels that demolition and rebuilding would be the main motivate to purchase. They say, “The Bungalow is a somewhat secondary thought in the scheme of things.”

All this, of course, will be the subject of planning permission. Planners are likely to sanction a rebuild on the existing footprint and might even continence an extension. What one hopes they would prevent is something that wrecks the rear of Nantclwyd House, given Castle Street’s unique heritage and The Bungalow’s position next to the Castle’s parkland. It needs to be in keeping.

The cost of The Bungalow and its land comes in at an equivalent of some £500,000 an acre. Plus the cost of demolition and building. Not cheap, then.

Photos were taken from Nantclwyd y Dre, with thanks to the Friends for allowing my photographer access. The plan shows The Bungalow (circled in red) with the approximate extent of land in blue.
