Snow on Snow (as the carol goes)

The roads were quite slippery in Rhuthun/Ruthin, this morning, with blackening early snow churned by traffic. You could tell Ysgol Brynhyfryd was shut by the numbers of pupils walking jubilantly *away* from the school from about 8.15, in rather high spirits it has to be said. At that time, there seemed little real problem. Perhaps the powers that be had foresight as to what would happen before closing time. There would’ve been chaos, no doubt.

For, although road conditions eased quite quickly, it was about 3 p.m. that the snow returned with a vengeance. It didn’t take long for the road network to whiten up. Reports suggest is was much worse to the north, in Dinbych/Denbigh and beyond, with Rhuthun residents effectively stuck in traffic as far afield as the A55. It’s all a bit of a nuisance (for anyone other than the pupils at Ysgol Brynhyfryd).

We’ve had it easy really, though, till now. The snow we saw in town before Christmas Eve soon vanished here... but not on the hills surounding Rhuthun. Spare a thought for those who live there. Over the past week, cars and four-wheel-drives from the hills have been arriving in town with several inches of snow across their roofs or bonnets.

Incidentally, why do they do that? Why don’t they clear *all* the snow off? Don’t they realise that this can be a hazard, as snow from the bonnet and roof caught in the wind flurries across the windscreen, causing a net curtain effect. Perhaps they leave it through ignorance, or laziness, or perhaps even to show off. Mre likely, they've exhausted themselves trying to dig out. Does anyone know?

Well, it was Rhuthun’s turn this afternoon. And those in the hinterland too, no doubt… again. We’ve not had snow like this for a few years.

Keep an eye on Rhuthun Weather. The remarkable site has managed to predict matters quite accurately during the cold spell. I notice that the percentage chance of snow during the night’s increased from 20 to 40.
