Tell 'em about the Honey, Mummy

It’s been just over a year since Leonardo’s deli reintroduced Rhuthun to the honey bun. This sticky, folded sweet bread laced with honey was once said to be unique to Rhuthun, though some say it originated further north. Attempts some years ago to bring it back as the Rhuthun Kiss failed. Leonardo’s has done reasonable business with the honey bun’s latest incarnation.

Older residents may recall the honey bun. It’s rather difficult to determine whether Leonardo’s is exactly like the original. What matters most is that it’s back.

Leonardo’s took a rather long Christmas break this year and it gave an opportunity to discover that recently opened Popty’r Eryr also bakes a honey bun. In times gone by, there was never a single, solitary outlet, and the same’s true now. The two products are similar but not identical. Popty’r Eryr's seems stickier, softer and has a subtle vanilla flavour underlying it. Ultimately, it’s a matter of taste as to which you prefer… and which you feel is more like the original.

Popty’r Eryr’s is currently at 60p rather than Leonardo’s 75p, if that makes any difference. At least, Leonardo’s was 75p the last time we tried (they’d sold out, a testament to the honey bun’s popularity).
