Looking Back at 2008

Rhuthun/Ruthin’s look back at what we felt were the major events of 2008…

January 2008—Rhuthn’s Somerfield supermarket closes. CITS and Studio 21 open. The town sees a spate of vandalism, and not for the last time in 2008. Wind farm protesters rejoice at the victory at planning committee, albeit briefly.

February 2008—Rhuthun appears in the Daily Telegraph’s top 50 UK places to live. Tilly Mint opens. Rhuthun Whoolefoods finds itself temporarily on the market. Duke’s Stores also goes on sale. Rhuthun hosts its first continental food market.

March 2008—the developers at Glasdir re-brand a fourth time, court Ruthinians at a public meeting at the Castle… as rumours circulate that housing is sold en masse to a Liverpool housing associations. The Picture House Restaurant opens, as does Bargeinion B ac M. Sun Tân beauty closes though it is to be replaced in May by Blossoms.

April 2008—Slater’s, Rhuthun’s only new car showroom, closes. Luncinda, Doodles and Majestic Travel close. Doodles is replaced in May by similar shop Spaven’s. 7-Twenty Fashions is put up for sale and will eventually close. Vacant Key Properties becomes the former Lôn Parcwr locksmith. A young Pwllglas motorist is killed on the A494 just east of Rhuthun. The government overturns local decision on wind farms. Llanfwrog community centre opens.

May 2008—County elections see ousting by a slim margin of long-standing Elwyn Edwards. The town’s post office is put up for sale. BT plans to axe village call boxes. Nantclwyd y Dre wins the RICS Welsh Building Conservation Award 2008. The adult education centre at Ysgol Brynhyfryd opens. The Craft Centre Gallery in town closes.

June 2008—Diesel in Rhuthun reaches a high of £6.04 per gallon (£1.329 per litre). Interpretation boards appear in local car parks. Your Vale newspaper launched, replacing long-standing Vale Advertiser.

July 2008—Canolfan Grefftau/Craft Centre opens to the public, amid some strong views from the community about the building itself. Having skipped 2007, the flower show moves to the Farmers’ Mart. Ysgol Borthyn pupils highlight dog mess in town. Vale Carpets opens on Well Street. L E Jones is again in trouble over drivers’ hours issues. Owners of Castell Rhuthun Castle put it on the market.

August 2008—The post office consults on closures, to include Llanfwrog. Dinbych is to have a modern out-of-town development to include a new Tesco. The Coffee Mill closes.

September 2008—The Whoolefood Shop closes Saturday afternoon to Tuesday morning. The Denbighshire Visitor replaces Your Vale, which in turn replaced the Vale Advertiser in June. Que Paso Mexican takeaway closes. Jane Gow opens replacing Molyneux’s (formerly Dodd’s) as the Halifax agency.

October 2008—Town shop windows go pink for breast cancer research. Many residents of Clawddnewydd strip off for similar charities. The Plas Meddyg extension becomes visible. There are proposals to gate Canol y Dre during Venue opening hours. MDUK hair on the Square opens and the Chiron Centre closes. Glasdir show houses open. The Ruthin & Denbigh Evening Leader launches. Watergate Tearooms reopen but lasts only a matter of weeks.

November 2008—Wetherspoon’s pulls out of the Castle Hotel deal… as the Castle hotel relaunches as a steak house. Npower launches publicity drive for more proposed wind farms west of Rhuthun. Llanfwrog post office doesn’t get the reprieve for which people had hoped. Eagles Bakery opens.

December 2008—Rhuthun Organics closes ahead of what pundits are saying will be a tough year for organic retailers and producers. The pre-Christmas push known as ANRHEG Nadolig is deemed a success, as are the town Christmas lights and illuminated Canolfan Grefft. Craft Centre officially opened this month. Designer Wear closes in Clwyd Street.
