Thronged

Friday 5th December is Rhuthun’s Christmas late night fling. We expect to see all our readers out supporting our town traders. There’s a three line whip, you know.

Meanwhile, yesterday evening was Dinbych/Denbigh’s turn. If Rhuthun’s event is half as popular as Dinbych’s, it will be a success. Crowds poured out to throng the streets of Denbigh town centre in an impressive way. Whether this will be the case next year, with the potential of a new shopping development at the foot of Vale Street at Townsend remains to be seen. Tesco will no doubt be available to 10 p.m. and other units may well open till 8 p.m., all year round.

Woolworth’s was still trading in Dinbych, and busy, too. Denbigh’s Woolworth’s was once one of the features that set Dinbych apart from Rhuthun. Looking around the store at what was forlornly on offer, it occurred to me that Rhuthun has its very own F W Woolworth in the shape of Bargeinion B ac M Bargains. OK, so B & M may perhaps take quality to lowish depths but B & M is in the Woolworth tradition, selling a huge range of goods once associated with FWW, if not quite at Woolworth’s 3d and 6d. And B & M is certainly popular, like Woolies still is. Back in history, Woolworth’s was the only place you could find all sorts of things under one roof; now we have supermarkets and shops like B & M squeezing Woolies from both ends.
