A Challenge

Do we reckon the local police do a good job? Do we need CCTV in the town? We’re told crime is falling in Rhuthun, but what is the perception? What are our local policing issues? Is there an officer available when you need one?

In a comment yesterday to the 13th September post entitled School Disco, Mavis Evans, Rhuthun’s police community sergeant, issued a challenge. Unhappy about one of the remarks left on 13 September, she invites the commenter to spend a Rhuthun Saturday evening with the police to see for themselves the challenges they face and the way they tackle them. Said Sgt Evans, ‘Policing Ruthin and the rural areas on a Saturday night is busy and demanding and this is done to our best efforts’.

Might Sgt Evans be persuaded to extend the invitation to anyone reading this site, so that we could get some real ‘citizen journalism’? How does someone feel about accompanying her and reporting back in a guest article, anonymously, under a pseudonym, or otherwise?

This week, the president of the Police Superintendents’ Association rather publicly felt that UK-wide the police’s reputation was “dented and bruised” and the public disenchanted with them. Perhaps the Pirates of Penzance were right: the policeman’s lot is truly not a happy one.

Everyone in public service is open to challenge and rarely can they fully defend themselves. This applies especially to the police. If Sgt Evans’s invitation stands, here’s an opportunity to get some good publicity for the local station. Anyone who’s met Sgt Evans will know she’s passionate about policing her patch and she believes wholeheartedly in what she does.

Are there any takers? Please email.
