Sitting in Café R. Right Now

While watching the world go by from Café R and enjoying a Mocha (£1.90) & homemade scone and cream (£2.10), new technology can even allow a blog post direct from the café at heart of the new Canolfan CrefftRhuthun/Ruthin Craft Centre. A little experiment in mobile blogging, if you like. If you pop in to Café R right now, say hi.

Unless you pause a while in the café, one of the new Craft Centre's features will pass you by. It's the photography along the café walls. Here in 25 shots visitors get a ‘feel’ for Rhuthun beyond that which you’d expect. A couple of images are obvious but as your eyes ‘walk’ around the room, you begin to realise that most are very subtle.

This virtuosa photographer uses images as art, exploring the less-well-known crannies of Rhuthun. Monochrome gives each image an exotic edge. I suspect the aim is rather subliminally to create a desire to finish your drink and pop into town. The craft centre could’ve made it obvious, with the usual ‘look at me’ type literature and information boards. But the centre's nothing if not surprising.

Instead, this quiet discriminating approach doesn’t shout about Rhuthun, it creates an appetite to explore. Visitors who come to see the exhibitions or craftspeople at work will enjoy a meal or drink and, who knows, migrate towards town with the high expectations the photos bestow.
