An Open Letter to Ann Jones

No, not *the* Ann Jones AS/AM whose constituency now extends south to Rhewl, but Ann Jones of Yr Wyddgrug/Mold, who wrote to the Free Press complaining about the cost in Rhuthun of parking, petrol and fish & chips.

We share your view, Ann, that fish 'n' chips is expensive in Rhuthun. We're at a loss to explain why. One reason, perhaps, is that both Wernfechan and Clwyd Street stores are in fact one and the same, or they were the last we heard. Whether this accounts for the extra 25 per cent compared to your home town, we can't say. The loss of Borthyn's chip shop (latterly a Chinese chippy) was a blow. But there are plenty of other outlets to try, including a new Mexican, kebab, a couple of Chinese, an Indian, and a pizzeria, so please don’t let take away prices deter you.

As for petrol, well, we have to say that Rhuthun's garages probably have to pay wholesale prices that are equivalent to or even above the *retail* prices offered in Yr Wyddgrug/Mold. Volumes are lower in Rhuthun and the distance from the distribution centres greater. Ann, it's a concern for us here, too, but something of a fact of life.

We understand, Ann, that parking fees on the Square are deliberately set high to avoid space blocking. Better for you to choose a long stay car park, offering more reasonable prices, cheap when you compare them to some towns that offer the visitor much less than does Rhuthun. Paying for car parking is never popular and that in Yr Wyddgrug/Mold is unusually cheap. Given Rhuthun’s uniqueness, it’s but a small percentage of the overall day out here.

And what's this ‘medieval castle’ you spent a ‘wonderful day’ visiting? Do you mean the Castell Rhuthun Castle? If you do, parking there's free but it's not open to the general public other than during the recent ‘Garden Open’ event. There was plenty of available parking for the open garden.

Next time you come, better to seek out long term car parks, fuel up at home and bring a packed lunch! Seriously, Ann, in spite of these issues, you'll agree that unspoilt Rhuthun's offers something different and unusual. A gem like this is worth every penny.
