Top Dre

Whether you can say that the Three Castles tea stop received sufficient publicity of not, that’s not a criticism that can ever be levelled at pwyllgor Gwyl Rhuthun/Ruthin Festival committee.

Snippets are beginning to appear in the local newspapers, including a photo of extraordinary and well known singer Mirain Haf in a pose that didn’t really work. The now long-established website gives full festival details and if that wasn’t enough, leaflets were delivered house-to-house.

It was something of a surprise to learn that in spite of the festival’s increasing popularity year-on-year, unlike last year one of the sponsors is *not* to be Tesco.

In 2006 Tesco supported Top Dre, the six-hour musical finale. This was several weeks ahead of the store's opening in Rhuthun. Perhaps Tesco was unhappy with the drinking in the Square thereafter. Perhaps Tesco no longer needs to be seen as a good neighbour or flatter the community, now it’s established. Or perhaps local supporters are less keen to align themselves with Tesco following the off-on store expansion plans.

Instead, Top of Town is being sponsored by the Welsh Church Act Fund. What an unusual sponsor for an event often linked to flowing wine and beer! In addition to its educational promotion and the relief of hardship, poverty and distress, the Fund’s philanthropic nature apparently extends to advancing an appreciation of Welsh arts and to the social & recreational.
