Waiting Game

Does Tesco actually *want* to expand its Rhuthun/Ruthin store?

This was the question asked in January when a somewhat odd situation arose. Then, Tesco seemed to distance itself from Cathco, the property developer responsible for the original and subsequent expansion planning applications.

At the time, a Tesco spokesman said, “Tesco did not agree to expand the store” and that the expansion application was “development led” rather than Tesco led.

We questioned at the time whether this was a case of left hand-right hand not knowing what the other was doing or whether there was something a little more disingenuous going on. Why, for example, should Cathco go to the time and expense of expansion plans and application when Tesco didn’t want it? Or perhaps there is a simpler explanation: this is how developments work.

All Tesco can say at the moment is that nothing has been ruled out.

Perhaps a decision is pending news of what might happen at the former Dinbych/Denbigh KwikSave site. No matter which supermarket comes to Dinbych, it will have an impact on Tesco’s trading in Rhuthun. And that would be the case if it was Tesco itself; the retail industry calls this cannibalism.
