Confused? You Will Be

If it’d been the council, the police, national assembly or some other public body, the press would’ve vilified the organisation’s left hand for not knowing what its right was up to. There’d be an editorial on the subject.

It was, instead, Britain’s largest retailer. Tomorrow’s Free Press reports that Tesco has no plans to enlarge its Rhuthun store – in spite of a planning application dated April 2006 to do just that, rejected by county planners in October.

So, we find Tesco never wanted to expand in Rhuthun in the first place.

Does this seem odd? Why go to all the trouble of a planning application, then?

Apparently, Tesco claims that the expansion application was “developer-led”. Said a Tesco spokesman, “Cathco [the property dealer] are the ones that put the application forward. Tesco did not agree to expand the store”, adding “we have not got plans for the store in the near future.”

The phrase “in the near future” might ring some alarm bells with those who were against the store’s expansion. Leaving this aside, you just get the impression that either Cathco was a little dense in submitting an application that Tesco didn’t want; or Tesco knew all about the application and upon its failure has found a convenient way of distancing itself from it.

Will we next hear that the original application submitted by Cathco was “developer-led” and that Tesco really didn’t want to trade in Rhuthun after all?
