Is Local really Local?

Rhetorical question: is Wales a region or a nation?

We are indebted to Rhys Wynne for pointing out that the Advertising Standards Authority has criticised an advert claiming some foods sold at Tesco Bangor is “local”.

Tesco is convinced that food prepared anywhere in Wales can be classed as “local”. The ASA thinks differently – only food from the immediate area can be said to be “local”. The ASA dubbed the ad as “misleading”.

As we have said relating to Rhuthun Tesco Ruthin, this is an issue for Rhuthun. In its introductory leaflet, Tesco stated it “goes out of its way to source a wide range of products from local suppliers…” Well, there aren’t that many from Wales and certainly few from Dyffryn Clwyd/Vale of Clwyd. Upon Tesco’s opening, the only local products we could find were Cadog butter and the Denbighshire Free Press.

Of the Bangor issue, a Gwynedd councillor stated, "They wouldn't advertise food being sold in London as local if it was produced in Manchester."

Which all goes to show that, so far as Tesco is concerned, Wales is a “region” and not a country, a nation, a people.
