Tescos' Next Move

Just over a month since it opened, the story of Rhuthun/Ruthin’s Tesco ain’t over yet!

Denbighshire council’s planning committee deliberates on Wednesday whether or not the store should be increased from its current 2,745 m2 to 4,126m2. This is not the 50 per cent increase as the numbers suggest. These are in fact square measurements, and Tesco’s plan effectively doubles the size of the store.

If approved – and the Free Press states that council officers recommend approval – Tesco is expected to incorporate a café and more non-food goods in the town, thereby threatening businesses as yet *relatively* “safe” businesses, including the seemingly growing number of clothes and other comparison retailers in the town centre.

Objectors include 150 people who support the current owners of adjacent Mike Williams Engineering, whose land will be used for the expansion and Greenfield Road residents. Others cite increased noise and the visual impact of the shop and increased traffic volumes at the so-called Briec roundabout.

Food and non-food town traders fear for employment.

The photo shows a flashback to the store’s opening day when Tesco deployed a member of staff to help customers find a parking space.
