Happy Anniversary?

It’s exactly one month since Tesco opened in Rhuthun/Ruthin. How are things going?

For Tesco, very nicely, thank you. It’s still rare to see a time when the store is empty or even appears to be struggling. It’s been well received by locals if an online poll is any judge. The Free Press is asking, “Since opening in Ruthin do you think Tesco has been a success story for the town?” This evening, the poll was registering 75 per cent of votes cast in favour of Tesco. (We’ve no idea of the numbers who voted).

What of the town itself?

Traders report a drop in business – some say it’s a significant drop. We understand that at least one shop has laid staff off. Of course, it’s summer (allegedly) and this affects shoppers as more people are away on holiday but traders are also saying that there are fewer tourists as well as fewer locals. There’s a belief among smaller traders that anyone coming into the town is parking at Tesco and going no further. The prognosis seems to be gloomy, as the town definitely is much emptier. The smaller traders are starting to say “I told you so”.

But, of course, it’s still early days, and next week, it’s back to normal for most people, after their vacation. Only time will tell.

We are aware from a Dinbych/Denbigh resident that Morrison’s in Denbigh is back to its usual numbers, following a significant drop at the opening of Tesco.
