Third week...

How are things doing in Rhuthun/Ruthin towards the end of Tesco’s third week?

One of the checkout operatives at Co-op felt more optimistic, saying, “There are signs that more customers are coming back. It’s certainly busier and we’ve got our fingers crossed. I’ve been to Tesco once and I didn’t like it. It’s so cramped and the car park is so tight”.

We’re not sure of the evidence for the Co-op customer loyalty. At 4.30 p.m. today, there were 19 in Co-op, buying mostly odds and ends. Though this is an improvement over recent days, it’s still poor.

It was difficult to count the numbers in Tesco, ten minutes later. We estimate 157 and a great number of them had full or filling trolleys. 157 is far more than the Co-op could ever manage on an ordinary Friday in August, in the pre-Tesco days.

By contrast, there were eight in Somerfield.

A defiant Co-op spokeswoman in an article in the Free Press stated, “Sales at the Rhuthun/Ruthin Co-op supermarket have been affected by the opening of the Tesco store, however, we are confident that our trading performance will improve. The Co-op is a community retailer… and has a loyal customer base. We have no intention of closing the store…”

By “community retailer”, does this imply second division?
