Spin?

The new manager of Rhuthun/Ruthin’s Tesco had this to say on its employment:

“These are new permanent jobs, not seasonal, so that should… help bring even more stability to the town.”

There’s no doubt that an extra 180 wage packets will help the local economy. But, how many higher paid managerial staff, like the manager himself, come from or live in Rhuthun/Ruthin? Will generous staff discounts mean that employees will spent their wages not in the town buy at Tesco’s? And what about stability? At the moment, no one knows what the Tesco effect will be… will it be positive or negative? One thing’s certain, it will Tesco is a business and it will wish to over-trade if it can. Witness what’s happened in Abergele and Bangor.

The manager went on to say, “In support of local retailers we have purposefully not included any café or pharmacy in this development.”

Even though we on this site try to maintain a neutral position, we have to say that this statement sounds a little hollow. Looked at positively, there’s an incentive for people to walk into town for a drink or medicines. On the other hand, how long will it be before an expanded Tesco provides these facilities? And what about the other retailers whose businesses will not be supported by Tesco? Quite the reverse, in fact.

“Tesco will provide quality and convenience all under one roof without the need to struggle through traffic to Yr Wyddgrug/Mold or Dinbych/Denbigh.”

You can’t argue with Tesco’s success in terms of convenience. And, for many, travel out of the area for food’s a bind, unless you shop at Somerfield. Or Co-op. But to say that it's a struggle to Denbigh’s an exaggeration.

“We hope Tesco will attract people to Rhuthun/Ruthin and create a renewed interest in the historic town.”

Hmmm. Like at historic Hexham? Tesco’s growth strategy is dependent upon profit. At whose expense is that profit? The local trader. But, we on this site are at least prepared to give Tesco a chance in this regard. But we shall see what happens.
