Doubling in Size?

Britain’s biggest supermarket chain is to get bigger – in Rhuthun/Ruthin.

In fact, it is to double from its 2,745 square metres to 4,126. The plans will also include a café, external covered compound and canopy, ancillary service yard buildings and sprinkler tank and car parking.

The proposals have the thumbs-up from the town council, in spite of concerns raised over increased traffic flow near the store.

Rhuthun/Ruthin’s civic association questioned why this enhancement wasn’t included in it original proposals, stating to the Free Press, “We can’t help feeling that this was in Tesco’s mind from the beginning. Having got a foot in the door and started work on the original proposal, they have proposed a substantial extension, which is now difficult to refuse.

“When the first proposal was mooted, they [town council] specifically opposed the idea that there should be a cafe, on the grounds that the town was already well provided with places to eat and drink. It looks as if Tesco will now go into direct competition with them, as well as with the existing supermarkets in town, whose future now looks bleak.”

One wonders whether this is Tesco’s style – both the Mold and Bangor branches have been increased massively, though both happened after the stores had been trading. In Bangor’s case, it has almost doubled in size.
