Spot the Difference

30 second read ▼

Here is a shot of Market Street from the Levelling Up consultation. It appears that there’s one-way traffic heading from the Square. The whole design is very pleasing and it sets off the town hall well. The road and pavement are both imaginatively set out. The pavements in particular are good and wide.

We have a choice. In the second shot, there’s a contraflow cycle path. It’s an ugly red swathe that intrusively cuts right through the scene. On it are two cyclists. How often do you ever see one cyclists on Market Street, let alone two? We lose the wider footway and the remodelling of the path of the road. For the sake of two cyclists, the overwhelming majority of active travellers (pedestrians) have to suffer a poorer designed and, let’s face it, a very unsightly street scene.
