A Sign of the Times

Two minute read ▼

Yesterday, we looked at the burgeoning number of barbers in town. Today, it’s the turn of women’s hairdressers.

We have eight. That’s only three more than the current number of (five) barbers. That makes 13 places in town to get your hair styled or just cut. It would seem from reports elsewhere that the beauty sector accounts for only about 10 per cent of town centre business premises. It seems much more.

We’ve actually lost three hairdressers since the coronavirus pandemic. Surprisingly, one such business closed in January this year (The Salon, Clwyd Street). Anfried Hair Fashions on Denbigh Road closed in early 2022. And between the two dates, Vanity Fayre (The Square) shut.

So, those who complain that the town is one giant hair salon may be off the mark a little.

Some of our salons do more than hair, of course. Beauty on the Square and the House of Hair & Beauty offer other ‘treatments’, an odd term more associated more with the dentist. (Centuries ago, barbers used to pull troublesome teeth.)

And there are bespoke premises offering beauty without the hair curlers. There are four. Even here, the numbers are declining. Blossom’s closed as required at the pandemic and reopened not in town but from the proprietress’ home. This spring, the Beauty Lounge (Upper Clwyd Street) is relocating to’r Wyddgrug/Mold.

You can also get your dog groomed in town.
