Facing Reality

It’s been a while since we posted a link on Facebook back to this blog. We did so on March 17th, a week ago, exactly six months after the introduction of the blanket 20 mph default speed limit. We expected two things:

A raft of negative comments about 20 mph

To date, there’s been none. This surprised us. Are we all now so anaesthetised to 20 mph that it no longer matters? Or, as the figures in our March 17th post suggest, are we simply ignoring the new limit, anyway?

❷ A flood of people clicking over from Facebook to here to Bro Rhuthun

We can report there were few directly from Facebook. We provided the link on the Ruthin/Rhuthun Facebook page (previously called the Fans of the Old Ruthin Blog, after us). It has 10,418 members. The number of people between March 17th and 20th who used the link from there to here was 143. That’s about one per cent of the membership.

Either people were disinterested or perhaps the power of social media is exaggerated. What we actually think is that had this found its way onto the so-called Real Fans of Rhuthun, things would’ve been different.

It’s nevertheless interesting to see where people came from. 38 per cent were from Rhuthun. 22 per cent were from elsewhere in Wales (six per cent from Wrecsam). Seven per cent were from London. A further seven per cent were unidentifiable.

Some unusual places from which people clicked through from Facebook were Abu Dhabi, Bucharest, Canberra, Hamilton (NZ), Hobart, Nice and Walthamstow.  Of course, this could simply be a result of VPNs but it’s fascinating to think that someone in Walthamstow is interested in 20 mph in Rhuthun. Would anyone from Rhuthun be as keen on traffic in north east London?
