It’s rather sad to report that Resource Wales’ From the Earth café (opposite the Manor House, Well Street) closed five days after we thought it was
beginning to make a breakthrough in terms of numbers using it. It’s officially ‘closed until further notice’. To me, that sounds like it has closed permanently. I’d be happy to be proven wrong. Information from the owners is limited. The likelihood of a new tenant on a commercial basis is slim. Before From the Earth, the unit had been empty for some time.
And, in similarly downbeat news, Resource’s Bws Benthig/Borrow Bus is ‘paused until further notice’. Only the day before had they posted on Facebook about their catalogue. Informed sources suggest that the ‘bus’ driver’s post is redundant. Again, please prove us wrong.
Both initiatives were built on high principles. They reduced waste and landfill. They offered services at below market prices. The borrow bus meant that you could hire tools and equipment without locking up your capital on items you rarely used or would struggle to maintain. We thought that there was funding for a further year, possibly two. It appears not.
We shall be the poorer without them.
