Perhaps I shouldn't make promises I cannot keep: here's a further update on 20 mph.

Some people have defaced many of Rhuthun/Ruthin's new 20 mph lollipops (and elsewhere). Here's a selection of photographs. (Do see if you recognise the locations.)

My guess is that the perpetrators don't live on main roads, where the 20 mph traffic speed and therefore road noise is greatly reduced. I bet they're not those in households without a car or those who walk and cycle much. Neither will they be mobility-impaired people who now stand a chance of crossing the road in a much easier fashion.

It's sad that there should be such criminal damage, especially as the signs will only be cleaned or replaced. The actions won't result in reversal to 30. It means that motorists are no better than the extreme anti-car protesters who have disrupted life in conurbations.

On the other hand, the daubing is a manifestation of the huge frustration many motorists feel about the new 20 mph default limit. We've had civil disobedience in the past. In Wales, we've seen the Rebecca Riots of the 19th century. Largely in England, there were the poll tax riots. Obviously, defacement of 20 mph signs is on a somewhat different level but the principle's the same: motorists feel that it's unjust and that no one is listening to them.
