In early autumn sunshine, Clwyd Alyn's Glasdir estate looks swish

I've not spoken to anyone who has a bad thing to say about the design of the new Clwyd Alyn estate next to Taylor Wimpey's. In fact, most people think that the original Taylor Wimpey stock is to let and that the new builds are market housing for sale. That's a testament to Clwyd Alyn but also an indictment for Taylor Wimpey's rather ordinary, crowded and basic-looking commodities.

Take a walk around Clwyd Alyn's site and you get the feeling of space. There are good walking links to the Taylor Wimpey side, as well.

Swales such as this will attenuate any likelihood of flooding, they say. There are also below ground reservoirs. Being social housing, the landlord takes on the main building risk in the event of flooding

And, if you believe Clwyd Alyn's website, one month on and the first tenants seem delighted. Why wouldn't they be? Brand new and cheap to run. Not too crammed in. It's a dream come true and must've been like the social housing of the 1930s-1970s, when new.

And there's little on the market in terms of rentals available... unless you want to spend £1,000 and up per month. In fact, there are just four to rent within five miles of town.

Builders Williams (Bala) will return their compound to the Glasdir schools, so that both primaries can benefit from greater outside space.
