One More Monday

One further snag concerning Mondays in Rhuthun/Ruthin is the choice of places to eat for a typical light lunch. Closed are the Craft Centre café, the market hall and Seconds café. Leonardo's has a food hygiene rating of zero, so that was out of the question (but was also closed). And for Carniboar and Small Plates, low food hygiene scores aside, were similarly shut, though we had in mind a café rather than restaurant meal, anyway.

That leaves Chatwin's and The Candy Shack. The Candy Shack offers decent food at reasonable prices but judging by the noise inside it was doing well with school holiday children. Perhaps best avoided till September. As for Chatwin's, I tend to find the pungent smell these days is somewhat overwhelming. And I confess I forgot to check whether Teacups was open. Sorry, Teacups.

The upshot of all this was that we tried Wetherspoon's. It has been a while since we ate there, certainly at lunchtime. We were pleased to see a better menu than we remembered (though it doesn't pretend to match restaurant quality). And the choice was quite outstanding. The portion sizes were OK, though I think smaller than previously; and the cost inevitably had increased. But Spoon's is not alone in that.

Overall, we were pleasantly surprised. It was a last resort but it no longer needs to be. And there's one main bonus: its opening times are long and consistent, including on Mondays.

○ Also, it's worth noting that any visitors staying in Rhuthun will have very little choice of where to eat on Monday and Tuesday evenings. If they're staying at the Castle Hotel, they may wish to sample food somewhere else but on these days the choice in town is just Wetherspoon's.
