40: Is This Appropriate?

The latest change in the speed limit was approved by the county council. It'll be 40 mph on the Nant y Garth, then.

Rarely do we agree with the council's recent speed limit review decisions. And the same goes for the Nant y Garth pass. Why? Because:
  • The bends themselves are self-limiting. If someone really wants to exceed 40, a speed limit ain't gonna stop 'em.
  • 40 will extend too far along the straight at the upper (Llandegla) end of the pass, where it's perfectly safe to overtake (with due caution, as is always required during overtaking).
As usual and as stated above, those who have a mind to exceed the limit will continue to do so.

Denbighshire's own independent 2011 speed limit review recommended that the Nant y Garth should be reduced to 30 mph across the bends, with 40 mph gateways at either end. This is draconian and, again, some of the tight radii are self-limiting to 30, anyway.
