Fatigue

The unseasonably good weather over the last week and a half, falling covid-19 rates and about one third of Wales' population having received one vaccine shot have resulted in a something of a shift in public perception.

We first saw it on February 18th, when the police replicated their earlier Colomendy industrial estate exercise along Lôn Parcwr. Police were stopping cars to ensure that motorists were travelling for essential purposes only; and to tackle the issue of car sharing for work, attributable to the spread of the infection, especially in Dinbych and Corwen. This was very much to mixed reviews.

Then, we've had warm weather. People seem to be of the view that they would rather travel for exercise than risk doing so in crowds. It's logical to think that a trip to the countryside is safer (for them) than exercising locally. It may not be quite so safe (for us).

More so than at any other time and the police seem to be having to defend themselves. This also seems to be the case for public health enforcement staff. This change of attitude is expected to continue as the evenings get lighter and the school holidays approach (three weeks to the Easter school break). These are people who aren't (generally) lawbreakers but they are now clamouring for a little more freedom.

The usual prejudices and perceptions apply: the police are out to fine people to line their own coffers. It simply doesn't work like that, of course.

The police are not going to get their vaccines any sooner than anyone else for their age or underlying conditions and several police officers are currently self-isolating because of contact with infected households and people.
