Aftermath of the Announcement

Where does yesterday's snap alter level 4 lockdown leave the town? And so close to Christmas?

This sign at Choo Choo proved to be a little premature

To recap, in shades of March 2020, yesterday's sudden announcements was the last day of permitted non-essential trading. Ignoring today, when the majority of shops are closed, there's still four days of potential trading left before Christmas Day.

Let's take a local business as an example, one by the name of Reebee's. They have a branch in Clwyd Street, one in Dinbych and they also have a shop near Heswall, England. As things stand, the Wirral is English tier 3. There, it can and will trade. But the two Welsh branches cannot, not in the normal fashion. Between the three, Reebee's has over £10,000 worth of *perishable* stock. Flowers won't keep. Reebee's is hoping for a similar rise in home deliveries as was the case for Mothering Sunday and Easter... you might not be able to see people at Christmas but you can instead send them flowers.

There seems some indecision in the notice that's been up for a few days at Castle Bell. Newsagents are permitted to open but Castle Bell cannot sell non-essential items

In fact, something unique for lockdown 3/tier 4 is that *any* business can offer an order and collect service, provided that this paid upfront. So, that'll help. There are so many with similarly perishable goods... Siop Nain (Christmas cards); Yellow Moon (flowers); Cefi (cards and chocolates); Castle Bell (not entirely sure what they offer these days and they may open to sell newspapers & magazines only; the candy Shack; cafés... the list goes on.

Take aways are permitted

There'll be another argument for sure about supermarkets, which are permitted to sell only essential items. This caused much bitterness during lockdown 2.If you're on social media, get ready with your tin helmet.

It's been such a bumpy ride since the summer and we've already lost the Army & Navy, the vape shop, the laundry next to it, The Star, On the Hill and Cwtch (Upper Clwyd Street, which is now an ingredients store for the meals delivery service at Small Plates). There have been openings, though... Himalaya, Healing Hands, Tafarn y Ddraig. But we're sorry to say that the prognosis is poor for towns such as Rhuthun/Ruthin, although we might expect to see some new growth in the spring because Rhuthun is still more resilient than larger towns
